You know the world of English is a fun and exciting place to be. I’m so glad you could join me for another lesson. Hi everybody this is Mr. Duncan in England. How are you today? Are you ok? I hope so. Are you happy? I hope so. Did you miss me? “No we didn’t.” Oh. That’s not very nice. In this lesson we will take a look at process of Asking and Answering questions. Are you ready?

A question is a sentence that generally needs a reply. When we ask a question it means that we are trying to find out more about something and we need extra information. Sometimes we ask a question because we want to expand our knowledge of a particular subject. Sometimes we put forward a question because we need a decision about something or an answer to a difficult situation.

คำถามคือประโยคที่โดยทั่วๆไปแล้วต้องการคำตอบ เวลาที่เราถามคำถาม เรามักจะต้องการข้อมูลอะไรเพิ่มเติม หรือ ต้องการขยายความรู้ทั่วไปของเรา หรือ เราอาจจะถามคำถามเพื่อช่วยในการตัดสินใจในสถานการณ์ยากลำบาก

Conundrum (N): ปริศนา
Difficulty (N): ความยากลำบาก
Poser (N): ปัญหาที่ท้าทาย
Predicament (N): สภาวะลำบากใจ
Problem (N): ปัญหา  
Puzzle (N): ปัญหาหรือสถานการณ์ที่ยากลำบาก
Quandary (N): ความไม่แน่ใจ
Query (N): คำถาม
Request (N): การขอร้อง
Riddle (N): ปริศนา  
Teaser (N): ปริศนา   

Before asking a question we normally begin with a prefix sentence.
Such as …
ก่อนที่เราจะถามคำถามเรามักจะขึ้นต้นด้วยประโยคเกริ่น เช่น

“I have a question for you”
ฉันอยากจะถามอะไรคุณสักหน่อย
“I want to put a question to you”
ฉันอยากจะถามอะไรคุณสักหน่อย
“I need your expertise with a problem I have”
ฉันอยากจะถามความเห็นของคุณหน่อย
“There is something I have been meaning to ask”
ฉันอยากจะถามอะไรคุณสักหน่อย
“Do you mind if I ask you a question?”
ฉันขอถามอะไรคุณหน่อยได้มั้ย
“Could I pick your brain?”
ขอถามอะไรหน่อยได้มั้ย
“Would it be ok for you to answer a question?”
ฉันขอถามอะไรคุณหน่อยได้มั้ย

Sometimes before asking a question we ask the person if we can ask them a question which is itself a question. So the first question is about whether or not I can ask a question. Well you get the general idea. It may sound a little strange but not all questions need an answer. Sometimes we ask questions as a way of expressing the way we feel or as a way of showing our frustration. We call this a Rhetorical Question. For example

บางครั้งก่อนถามคำถามเราก็เกริ่นขึ้นต้อยด้วยคำถามซะแล้ว มันอาจฟังดูประหลาดแต่มีคำถามบางประเภทที่ไม่ต้องการคำตอบ บางครั้งเราถามคำถามเพื่อที่จะระบายออกถึงความหงุดหงิด หรือ ความไม่พอใจต่อสถานการณ์รอบข้าง ซึ่งเราเรียกคำถามประเภทนี้ว่า คำถามที่ไม่ต้องการคำถอบ (Rhetorical Question) เช่น  

“Could my day get any worse?”
วันของฉันจะห่วยแตกไปกว่านี้ได้อีกมั้ยเนื่ย
“How am I going to pay the money back?”
ฉันจะเอาปัญญาที่ไหนหาตังค์มาใช้คืนเขาหว่า
“Am I going crazy?”
นี่ฉันจะบ้าไปแล้วหรือไงเนื่ย
“Could you make any more noise?”
ส่งเสียงดังกว่านี้อีกได้มั้ยล่ะ
“Do you think I’m going to stand here and listen to you?”
เธอคิดว่าฉันจะยินโง่อยู่ตรงนี้แล้วฟังเธอบ่นหรือไง

There is another type of question that cannot be answered because there is no answer to it. We call this type of question a Paradox. The most famous paradoxical question is what came first? The chicken or the egg?

ยังมีคำถามอีกประเภทที่ไม่สามารถตอบได้ เพราะมันไม่มีคำตอบ เราเรียกคำถามประเภทนี้ว่าคำถามโลกแตก (Paradox) คำถามโลกแตกที่เป็นที่รู้จักกัยดีก็คงจะหนีไม่พ้น ไก้กับไข่อะไรเกิดก่อนกัน

Comeback (N): การโต้ตอบแบบทันควัน
Counter (ADJ): ที่โต้ตอบออกไป
React (V): ตอบสนอง
Reply (N): การตอบ
Response (N): การตอบสนอง
Retort (V): โต้ตอบ
Solution (N): วิธีแก้ปัญหา

You are such a beautiful plant. Yes you are. Fortunately, answering a question is not so complicated or difficult to do. You only have to choices when responding. You either know the answer or you don’t. If you don’t know the answer, you simply say

เธอเป็นต้นไม้ที่สวยงามมากเลย จริงๆนะ โชคยังดีที่ว่าการตอบคำถามเป็นอะไรที่ไม่ซับซ้อนและไม่ยากเย็น คุณมีเพียงแค่สองทางเลือกเท่านั้นเวลาตอบคำถาม นั่นก็คือ คุณรู้คำตอบ หรือ คุณไม่รู้คำตอบ ถ้าคุณไม่รู้คำตอบ คุณสามารถพูดว่า

“I don’t know”
ฉันไม่รู้
“I have no idea”
ฉันไม่รู้
“I haven’t a clue”
ฉันไม่รู้
“It beats me”
ฉันยอมแพ้
“You have me there”
ฉันยอมแพ้
“I’m stumped”
ฉันงง
“Don’t ask me”
อย่ามาถามฉันนะ
“I dunno”
ฉันไม่รู้

There is a situation where you may not want to answer the question. Maybe you feel that the question is rude or too personal. So you refuse to give an answer. You can say

ในบางสถานการณ์ถึงแม้ว่าคุณจะรู้คำตอบแต่คุณก็ไม่อยากจะตอบขึ้นมาเฉยๆ โดยฉพาะอย่างยิ่ง เมื่อคำถามนั้นฟังดูหยาบคายหรือเป็นเรื่องส่วนตัวมากเกินไป คุณสามารถปฏิเสธการตอบคำถามเหล่านั้นโดยตอบว่า

“I’m sorry I don’t want to answer that”
โทษนะแต่ฉันไม่อยากจะตอบคำถามนั้น
“That is not a good question to ask”
นั่นไม่ใช่คำถามที่ดีเลยนะ
“You should not ask me that”
เธอไม่น่ามาถามฉันแบบนี้เลย
“I cannot tell you”
ฉันบอกเธอไม่ได้หรอก
“No comment”
ไม่มีความเห็น
“That’s for me to know and for you to find out”
นั่นมันเป็นเรื่องของฉัน
“Mind your own business”
ไม่ใช่ธุระกงการอะไรของเธอสักหน่อย

So next time, before you ask a question think carefully about whether it is good to ask it and if the other person will be willing to give a reply.
